Frequently Asked Questions
Q – “How much space do you need?”
STAGE
For audiences of 50 people or more, a stage 60-90cms high, with steps for the audience volunteers to use, is essential. If there is a band, Tim will perform in front of them but needs totally clear space of 2m deep x3m wide MINIMUM.
DANCEFLOOR
If you have a dancefloor between us and the audience, Tim can’t interact with them. Either:
1: Move the dancefloor to another part of the room.
2: Place a portable stage on the dancefloor, which is then removed after the show for dancing.
3: Bring guests up to sit “theatre-style” on chairs placed on the dancefloor immediately before the show
Q – “What do I need to provide?”
AUDIO SYSTEM
For the Comedy Magic Show, if it’s a very small group no amplification is needed.
For over 40 people it’s best to provide basic amplification. A sound system with either a microphone on a stand, or a radio microphone is essential.
For the Deluxe Show, you need to provide speakers and an amplifier beside the stage. Tim will plug his iPod and Headset Microphone into it.
LIGHTING
We always say “the more lights the better”. Stage lighting is essential so the magic can be seen, and a “followspot” light will enable everyone to see the show.
AV OPERATOR
If you have a person in charge of your audio/visual, they can call us to double check everything is perfect. If you don’t have an audio/visual supplier, we can arrange a sound system, lighting and an operator. Expect to pay $200-$300 for a basic system.
Q – “Do you need a dressing room?”
DRESSING ROOM
For the Comedy Magic Show Tim is ready to perform as soon as he walks in, so no dressing room is required.
For the Deluxe Show it is best if there is a private room (not a toilet!) that Tim can change and prepare his equipment in. Ideally this should be as close as possible to the stage.
Q – “How should we introduce you?”
INTRODUCTION
If you have a compere for your event, all they need to do is to give the audience a 5 minute warning that the show is about to start. We do the rest.
Alternately, you may prefer to use this introduction.
Q – “Can you do the show surrounded?”
ANGLE-PROOF
The magic Tim performs is state-of-the-art and can be viewed from any angle. However, the show itself is best viewed from the front.
BAD TABLES
If you have any guests seated at tables beside or behind the stage, they’ll see Tim’s back for most of the show.
DECORATIONS
Large table decorations make it hard for some members of the audience to see the show. You can have the waiters remove them immediately before showtime.
Q – “What’s the best time for the show?”
AFTER MAIN COURSE
Once main course has been cleared, your guests will be comfortable and ready to be entertained.
WAITERS
Make sure the waiters clear the tables and top up everybody’s drinks, that way they will not need to walk around during the show. This can be very distracting for your guests.
Q – “Can you do some magic for the guests as they arrive?”
STROLLING MAGIC
Having Tim mingle with your guests performing Close Up Magic as they arrive is the perfect party-starter. We offer discounted rates when you book Close Up Magic in conjunction with a Stage Show.
Q – “Do you get people up on stage with you?”
AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
Absolutely! This a key element in all of Tim’s shows and something you’ll remember for a very long time. Tim always chooses his volunteers at random (so you’ll never be accused of setting them up!) and always makes sure they leave the stage as the stars of the show.
Q – “Can you make our CEO disappear?”
CUSTOM MAGIC
If he or she is prepared to attend a 15 minute rehearsal before the guests arrive, Tim can make them appear or even levitate. He can also incorporate your message or design a special trick based around your product. Expect to pay anywhere from $300 to $3000 extra for this service.
Q – “Can you saw people in half and do big David Copperfield illusions?”
GRAND ILLUSIONS
We certainly can! Enquire about ‘Ellis & Webster’ for a large scale illusion show.
Q – “We want some magic themed souvenirs to give to our guests and decorate the room with, can you help?”
MAGIC THEMING
In addition to great Magic DVDs which not only feature great performances but also teach tricks everyone can do, we have access to an unlimited supply of simple tricks, hats, wands and decorations. Just give us at least two weeks notice!
